When HMS Astute departed on Sunday, she became the first nuclear attack submarine to leave Barrow to enter service with the Royal Navy since HMS Triumph in 1991 – 18 years ago.

Higher Education in Barrow will soon also mean a reference to one of Barrow’s largest developments for over a decade. In physical size and monetary value, the new £40m Furness College development will transform the appearance of Furness Business Park, creating the dominant building there. At nearly 20 metres in height the four storey lifelong learning hub will overlook the A590.

Last Thursday Chief Executives and Senior Management of four Korean companies visited James Fisher & Son plc and Furness. They had been to the Netherlands and London. Barrow was the only UK provincial centre they visited as part of their investment tour.

On Friday 30th October we will be launching a new Innovation Fund open to large, medium and small sized companies. Firms will be able to seek grants of up to £20,000, provided certain criteria are met.. The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority’s Socio-Economic Fund is supporting the scheme over the next 3 years as part of our new strategic partnership between the Authority and Furness Enterprise.
