Our life sciences maufacturing industry embraces biopharmaceuticals, pharmaceuticals and chemicals and industry directly employs around 1,500 people. It is part of the large concentration of biopharm and chemicals sector located in north west England.

GlaxoSmithKline Ulverston, is the best UK site for GSK's biopharmaceutical manufacturing,selected on 22 March 2012 the site in Ulverston will now see the first new GSK manufacturing facility to be built in the UK for almost 40 years take place most likely between 2014 and 2020. Approximately 350m pounds has been earmarked for its construction.Detailed planning and design of the new facility is underway along with obtaining necessary planning and related consents. Once construction starts, it is likely to take at least six years before the plant is fully operational.Build could attract much needed construction sytimulus to the economy employing at peak 500 people,with 300 or more when the site is operational.
When completed the new facility, pictured below, will help deliver GSK's biopharmaceuticals in late-stage development for treatment of diseases such as lupus and diabetes which represent approximately 20% of GSKs overall clinical pipeline.

This company manufactures powder based detergents. They employ a large number of people.
A 13.5 m pounds investment opened on 16 June 2000 was followed by further automation to enable the site to service supermarket own label powder detergent demand in the UK and export customers.
Elf Atochem's Sovereign Chemicals in Barrow and Kingfisher Chemicals at Ulverston produce building preservatives.
Centrica Energy at Rampside Road, Barrow handle and process condensate a by-product of natural gas coming ashore from the East Irish Sea gasfields. Both items are then exported as liquid fuel stock and bulk sulphuric acid.
Candle making is undertaken by Partylite Manufacturing (part of the American Blyth Industries Group) at their Barrow, Sandscale Park site and Wax- Lyrical (formerly Colony) at London Road, Lindal complete the chemicals processing activity in Furness.
