The Furness are has a significant concentration of companies undertaking defence related project management,design, manufacturing,systems integration and through life support for military systems using a highly skilled workforce.

Furness Enterprise objective has always been to maximise jobs and investment in Furness, we believe that the shipyard needs a balance of surface warship and submarine work to sustain its long term future.

Oxley Developments employ over 230 people to support airforces worldwide with specialist electronic equipment.

BAE SYSTEMS Submarine Solutions employ over 5,000 people to produce "fantastic fighting ships", some of the quietest nuclear powered submarines in the world. Their 169 acre Barrow shipyard. Barrow is the only site in the UK with a nuclear site licence allowing build of nuclear powered submarines. The Devonshire Dock Hall is the focal point of advanced engineering and modular build delivering submarines . A 24,000 tonne ship-lift also allows ships and submarines to be lifted into/out of the water.

Currently Barrow is building  "Astute" class submarines with first of class HMS Astute launched on 8 June 2007. BAE SYSTEMS provide a complete through life affordable customer support and solutions service to its defence customers.

BAE SYSTEMS Global Combat Systems division employs over 480 to deliver gun and missile systems and tracked military vehicles.

They produce components and precision engineered parts as well as specialist fabricated items. Other suppliers include Agrilek, Bay Towage, Deltawaite, Underwater Diving Services, Yarl Hydraulics.
